New Legends Manga Translation Vol 4 - Nemesis Star Convoy - Complete!

The Evil God's Star.

Oh baby.  I was most excited about this for a couple of reasons.  The first being, I love Star Convoy and the Nemesis Colouration looks fantastic.  Did they miss an opportunity by calling him "Black Star Convoy"?  The jury is out.  The second was, er... I can't remember now, but it probably has something to do with getting Galaxy Force more love.

Oddly it took me a while to work out what the title meant.  Like obviously Evil God can only be Unicron, but the star thing took me a while.  While the title used the kanji for star, which can be translated into Star, planet, world for example, my sudden epiphany was that the "Star" that belongs to the evil god is AKCHUALLY Star Convoy.  That makes perfect logical sense.

ON TOP OF THAT, I initially thought that Nemesis Star Convoy was an evolved form of Nemesis Convoy. However this is not that case.

There are also a while bunch of clever use things going on, like Nemesis Convoy's trailer spawning billions of Scourge (Nemesis Prime) clones and all sorts of other clever stuff.

Read on for more.

Read Left to right for these.

Comments and stuff I found nifty:

Confirmation of the 4 mysterious characters from "that scene" and Convoy, Ultra Magnus, Rodimus and Jazz being serious heavy weights.

Odd that Convoy would go to kick start planet Speedia over other planets.

I liked that Convoy slumbers within a toy box!  (just like the Nightbird factory from legends has her in Packaging)

Star Convoy's evil Zodiac orb holds the power of Unicron!

Acknowledgement of Star Convoy and Roller which is nice!

The Sideways guys make use of their Multi-names, which is a total PITA to translate.  It's easy in Japanese [Sideways + Plural (in this case the insulting "domo")] which just means "You two called Sideways," but in English, how do you make it not sound stupid?

  •  Sidewayss?
  •  Sideways's (incorrect apostrophe use...)?
  • Sideways gang(can you have a gang of two?)?

It's almost like they are their own faction they call "Sideways," as they later call themselves by their own names(which then confuses the previous Sideways "domo" earlier).  Personally I think Noisemaze is a kick ass name, so that's what I've always called him.  And Doubleface, is well, at the very least descriptive, despite him having three faces....

This Shockwave being the guy from Energon makes a nice little nod.  And his being joined with Shockfleet, his disliked rival was also pretty nifty.

Nexus Prime, enlarges when he combines with other things, robots etc. (page 14). Which I thought was a good use of the massive-UFO part that makes up the frame for Superion.  Now, it may just be me here (probably), but I like to think of this aspect as being a little nod to the origins of the character's name;  Nexus Maximus and the trouble (was it trouble or just embarrassment) that occurred at the time.  You see, it would seem that when choosing the name no-one did a quick search to find out what comes up, and what did come up at the time was a big dildo.  Actually a double ended one, so, one that combines two people...? of all things.  So the horny teenager in me hopes that that comment on page 14 is in fact a very subtle dick joke.

Incidentally, I made a few changes to about two of the speech bubbles, mainly because the Japanese left it pretty vague for what it was referring to, so while not a direct translation, it links the parts together better.  Not that I do direct translation anyway, because that ends up with awkward shit sounding text, but there you go.  The meaning is intact, and it's a solid bit of work, just with smooth reading.  Afterall, when Japanese people read these things, they don't have to put up with deliberately awkward wording, so why should other languages have to so the same.

On a personal level, I feel like my picture editing grew quite a bit, as this one presented some real challenges, which I think I dealt with nicely.  Still learning, but I'm pretty happy with the end result.

Last of all, enjoy.
