Marvel Legends Dr. Doom

x-default
You gotta love a guy who has an initial on their belt buckle don’t you?  You know, I always wondered whether Victor VonDoom felt that he got a raw deal in life.  Named doom right from the start.

Moving on to the toy though, I got this guy from the rebooted Marvel Legends line and later found out that he is actually a recolour of Dr Doom from one of the movie lines.  Wow.  Impressive, considering how naff Dr Doom was in the FF movie.  This figure has its drawbacks, but overall I think it’ pretty good.

I ended up getting 50% of this series of Epic Heroes.  Despite the fact Dr Doom is a villain and Deadpool is debatable…  So is Mystique in a way I guess, although she could be a good guy now, it’s been so long.  Usual carded box setup, once again with the comic books style font and the dot printing effect as well.  Some nicely glorious artwork on the back too, which differs to the front.

A quick blurb on how evil Dr Doom is. What a nasty guy! and the line up for this series.  Not a bad mix really.  The Punisher looks pretty cool, but I am not as sold on U.S Agent.  I wonder what the variant figures in this series were.  Never mind, let’s get the Dr out of the box!

He has a great bit of colour work going on.  Recalling from my experience with him in Marvel Super Heroes, the colour are looking good.  The green cloak and  silver armour.  Very nice.  They have used a fantastic silver as well.

As you can see, he is rather imposing.  The cape is fairly heavy and inflexible limiting his movement quite a bit but you can waggle his arms around a much as you’d like.  The legs are rather limited in both forward and backward motion by his skirt.

He has a good amount of joints in his body.  One that I rather appreciate is the on for his mid chest.  It allows him to lean back or forwards a little, which is handy considering the weight of the cape.

As you can see his armour is a definite knight armour style.  The joints are hidden by elbow and knee covering, both of which move separately from the rest of the joint.  Very nice.

You can remove the cape and hood as it’s all one piece and there are some very nice touches underneath.  Firstly I was surprised to see his eyes under the mask and the mask is sculpted rather well with rivets and some cool details in the mouth.  THEN I discovered the mask actually comes off!

More details on his armour such as clips pinning the two sides together, the way it wraps around his neck and a cool pistol holster for his pistol and it is delightfully sculpted with a cool leather effect.  Another nice addition is that the top of the holster is a flap and can be opened and closed as such!  The gun looks like a Walther p-38 as well.  Hello Megatron!

He has a specific gun holding hand complete with trigger finger.  It’s also nice to see once the cape is off he has some, um, jump jets?  in the back of his suit.  Very suitable since he had these in MVC games as well!

Now let’s get that mask off shall we?

The face is quite nicely sculpted with burns all over and he has no hair.  A crooked, slightly unhinged smile going on and the eyes still stand out rather well too!

Looks somewhat Robocop-esque.

The colouration is really good, in that they have made it actually looks like a burn all over his head as opposed to general other scarring.

The cape looks pretty cool on him without the mask as well.
Dr Doom
Very Creepy.
With the cape on, he an be a bit tricky to balance.  He has plenty of joints, but some of them are hindered by the sculpt of the armour.  Such as the ankles as they have this pointed area, which although looking rather nice stops him from being able to lean forward at the ankle.  This would’ve been a handy way to combat the heavy cape.  Thinking back on this now, I am not 100% sure, but I have the feeling that after pulling him out of the box, one of his thighs were around the wrong way.  After I corrected this, he seemed a whole lot better.

Rather nicely he is about the same height as most other Legends figures.  Lucky that most superheroes happen to be 6 foot tall hey?

So once again we have a very nice figure.  This one is let down by two things really.  The weight of the cape and the hindrance to the ankles that the sculpt of the shin provides.  This last one is a shame as it would almost negate the weight of the cape if it had been done correctly.  However even with those two drawbacks, it is still a very solid toy and can do most of the poses one would want from a Dr. Doom figure.  The gun holster and removable mask are both very nice touches.  I think personally, I would’ve liked him to be a tad more bulkier and taller than the rest of the figures, but overall, he is very nice indeed.

  1. looks great! I've never seen this set of figures or i might have gotten the mystique, but whatevs, i don't really collect marvel much anyway. she just seems to be one that would look cool next to my fembots and cortana.
